Who is an assessment for?

A diagnostic dyslexia assessment may be helpful if your child:

  • finds reading slow, tiring or inaccurate
  • struggles with spelling, even after lots of practice
  • finds it difficult to get their ideas down in writing
  • avoids reading or writing tasks
  • has difficulty remembering instructions or learning sequences
  • needs much longer than expected to complete literacy-based work
  • shows a gap between their ability and their written work
  • has lost confidence or become anxious around learning
  • has a family history of dyslexia or specific learning difficulties

What does the assessment include?

The assessment is carried out one-to-one and is designed to be as calm, relaxed and supportive as possible. I take a child-centred approach, helping each learner feel comfortable, listened to and able to show what they can do.

The assessment may explore areas such as:

  • reading accuracy and fluency
  • reading comprehension
  • spelling
  • writing skills
  • phonological awareness
  • memory
  • processing speed
  • rapid naming
  • underlying strengths and learning preferences

Before the assessment, I gather background information from parents or carers and, where appropriate, from school. This helps build a fuller picture of the learner’s educational history, current support, strengths and areas of difficulty.

What happens after the assessment?

Following the assessment, I carefully analyse the results alongside the background information and observations from the session.

You will receive a detailed written report explaining the learner’s profile in clear, accessible language. The report will include:

  • a summary of strengths and areas of difficulty
  • assessment results and what they mean
  • whether the learner shows a profile consistent with dyslexia
  • practical recommendations for home and school
  • suggested strategies, interventions and reasonable adjustments
  • next steps for support

A feedback session is also included, giving you the opportunity to discuss the findings, ask questions and think through the most helpful next steps.
